Kikujiro-zaka (Toyohashi, Aichi Pref.)

The country road in the scenery of “Kikujiro”‘s famous scene where Kikujio(Beat Takeshi) was waiting for a bus at bus stop in the middle of nowhere, hitchhiked on a rural hill road disguising himself as a blind man is an agricultural road that exists in the coastal fields on south of Toyohashi City, Aichi prefecture.

Actually, there has been no bus stop over here, and it was shot with a film set built up on the empty space. (There seems to have shot some scenes having run a bus, although they ended up cut scenes on the movie. )

The farmer man who appeared out of nowhere at the bus stop was played by Beat Kiyoshi, well known to be a partner of Beat Takeshi when they were pairing a comic duo “Two-Beat”.

Aside to that, the name of “Kikujiro-zaka”(zaka means hill road)is not a formal name but I call it on my own.

Toyohashi-City is second biggest city in Aichi prefecture and is located in about 80km away from Nagoya-City, prefectural capital . However, once you remote from downtown, you will see rural landscape soon.

This farm field that spreads out in coastal area, south of the city, has features such as a lot of hill roads due to ups and downs, which is getting crossed everywhere in this field.

Similar sceneries have confused me where i am driving as if i am in a maze of roads.

After I drove a car comparing to a picture of this scene from the movie for an hour, I finally found the correct place.

Today, it’s been so long since this movie was shot that plants are running rampant enough to narrow the road.

Leaves rustling in the breeze from sea, insects chirping in addition to warm air. These are enough to feel summer at this place.
